Under the Surface – Grasping for Leaves

When I was sixteen the youth group that I was a part of went on a trip to Denver.  That meant eighteen hours in a 15-passenger van with 10 teenagers.  The entire trip was close quarters. You were never alone.   We were either going to be the closest of friends by the end of the trip or never want to see each other again.

Around the midway point of the trip I was in “the guys” room changing, when suddenly the door opened and one of the girls walked into the room.  She turned red and ran out, while I grabbed whatever I could to cover up.  Every teen’s worst fear!  We were both embarrassed. Word quickly got around, and that embarrassing moment became the butt of jokes for the rest of the trip.

When I look back on that trip now, I see something interesting.  For the rest of the trip, the last person I wanted to be around was that girl and I think the last person she wanted to be around was me.  The embarrassment and shame over what happened caused me to avoid her.  This is the impact shame has in our lives.  Shame causes us to avoid people and, in some cases, even break off relationships.

This weekend as we continue our “Under the Surface” series we’ll be looking at the impact shame has in our lives and how shame destroys our relationships.  We’ll also explore how Jesus restores what shame destroys.  I hope you’ll join us as we explore what shame is, where it comes from, and most importantly how to defeat the shame each of us carry.

See you Sunday,

Pastor Kirk
