Have you ever witnessed the power of a lie?
A number of years ago one my friends (actually my boss at the time) turned 40. His birthday was a workday. One of my peers found out that it was his birthday and asked me how old our boss, Greg, was. I told her that today was Greg’s 50th birthday, to which she responded, “Boy he looks good for 50!” For the next few hours my co-worker, Tanya, ran around the organization letting people know it was Greg’s 50th birthday, so be sure to congratulate him when he came in. Tanya was responsible for Food Services in our organization, so she even began planning a bit of a 50th birthday celebration for coffee break.
I stifled my laughter as I observed Tanya going about her day, telling everyone in the office about Greg’s birthday. Then Tanya sent around email to everyone making sure they knew. I watched as the President’s Executive Assistant came hurriedly over to Tanya with a file in hand and told her that actually today was Greg’s 40th, not 50th birthday.
Tanya wasn’t too happy with me, but Greg thought it was hilarious. Tanya has forgiven me, and we laugh about it to this very day. In fact, when Greg turned 50 a few years ago, I congratulated him on turning 60 and we laughed about what happened.
It is amazing what a lie can do, isn’t it? A lie can compel us to action, a lie can redefine who we are, a lie can destroy a relationship and a lie that takes root in your soul can keep you from knowing yourself, knowing God and the people around you. Lies are powerful.
This weekend as we continue our ‘Under the Surface’ series, we are going to face the lies that are lurking in our souls. I hope you’ll join us as we look at Matthew 3:16-4:11 and discover the three lies that often lurk in our souls defining and driving us. Together we are going to discover how to not only face the lies, but break free from them and become what Jesus envisions.
See you Sunday!
