When Britton and I lived in Calgary we owned a house that had a fence that was desperately in need of repair.  Actually, it was beyond repair! The posts were rotted and it had a lean to it that could only be resolved by tearing it down. 

One summer we set about to rebuild our fence.  It was a huge fence, over 170 linear feet of it.  Each post-hole had to be re-dug and a new fence post put in.  It was an all summer project! 

We bought a manual post-hole auger to dig the new holes and set about digging the first few holes. It was slow going because we would dig down five or six inches and hit a rock.  No sooner had we dug up and gotten rid of that rock than we’d hit another and another.  These weren’t small rocks either, these were boulders.  After a full day of work, we managed to dig exactly three holes, because there were so many rocks hidden beneath the surface that we couldn’t see. 

We were frustrated, but there was nothing we could do.  We had to deal with the rocks.  The rocks needed to be dug up and dealt with before we could put in the new fence posts and build our new fence. 

This weekend we are starting a new series called “Under the Surface.”  In this series we are going to be inviting you to look beneath the surface of your life, into your soul, as see if there is anything that might be keeping you from experiencing a deeper connection and intimacy with God, with others and even your true self.  Jesus said that he came that we might have life, a rich and abundant life, but the things that are hidden under the surface in our soul keep us from experiencing this. 

I hope you’ll join us this weekend as we kick off this new series by looking at Matthew 12:33-37. We will find out what Jesus said about what lies beneath the surface of our lives, and how we can begin to unearth the rocks that are keeping us from becoming what Jesus envisions.
