Is it too late to change my order?

The other night I went out with some friends for a steak dinner at a fancy steakhouse. Someone else was footing the bill  so I was super excited.  I looked over the menu and knew exactly what I was going to have, a juicy ribeye.  My friends were going to get the filet because they said it was a better steak, and one was getting chicken, but I knew what I wanted and I wasn’t going to be convinced otherwise.

I placed my order. As I waited I enjoyed the appetizer, the fresh bread and salad.  It was all great, but I was all fired up to cut into my perfectly done ribeye steak.  Finally it came.  It smelled wonderful and it looked beautiful.  I picked up my knife to cut into it. It was done just the way I like it, medium-well with just a thin pink line in the centre.

Then something happened.  Rick’s steak came and then Kevin’s.  Suddenly, my ribeye looked tiny.  I felt like I had been given a second-rate steak.  The joy and delight that I’d had only a moment ago was gone. All I could think about was, “Is it too late to change my order?”

The meal was great and my ribeye was awesome, but I still can’t help but wonder if I maybe missed out on something better.

Have you ever had an experience like that?  Have you ever gotten exactly what you wanted, then saw what someone else had, and wanted what they had? It’s called coveting, comparing what you have to what someone else has, and not being satisfied.  We’ve all probably had moments when we have done it. Comparing and coveting always steals your joy.

Is there a way to prevent this?  How can we live a life of contentment in a culture that values ‘more’ and in a world that is always looking for ‘something better’?

This weekend our guest speaker David Wintemute will be speaking about coveting and the effects this behaviour can have on our lives.  I hope you’ll join us this weekend as we explore what God has to say about coveting and how to keep it from stealing your joy.

See you Sunday,
