Joy: Exalting Jesus – Discussion Guide

Joy comes from exalting Jesus
Pastor Daniel, October 7, 2018

Scripture: Philippians 1:12-26
Summary: When we exalt Christ we can experience joy in any situation because we are trusting that God is sovereign and in control of every situation.

Main Thought: Christ is most exalted when we trust that God is sovereign.

Getting to Know Each Other (Start Here):

  • Why do movies so often tell stories about people giving up their lives for someone or something?
  • What is one thing you’d give up everything for? Why?

Going Deeper:

  1. Pastor Daniel spoke about exalting Jesus with our lives. What does it mean to exalt Jesus? How is Jesus exalted in your life?

  2. What does Paul mean when he says that he is “in chains for Christ” (Philippians 1:13)? Does Paul see being in chains as a benefit or a drawback? How is Jesus exalted by Paul being in chains?

  3. Do you believe that following Jesus requires personal sacrifice? Why or why not? Does God require our sacrifice? Why or why not? Have you ever had to sacrifice something for the sake of following Jesus? What was it, what happened? How is Jesus exalted through our sacrifices?

  4. In Philippians 1:23 Paul says that he “desires to depart and be with Christ.” Have you ever felt this way about being with Christ? (That you’d rather be in heaven with Jesus than here on earth) Why or why not?

  5. What does Paul mean when he says, “to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Is that statement true for you?

  6. Pastor Daniel said that “Christ is exalted when we find our joy in him.” What does this mean? How do we find joy in

    Jesus?

Apply it:

  1. What has Holy Spirit been speaking to you about this week’s sermon? What does he want you to do?

  2. In what tangible and meaningful ways will you choose to exalt Jesus this week?

Pray without ceasing:

  • Pray for the upcoming Global Leadership Summit, that those who are far from God will hear the Gospel for the first time and respond and those who are near to God will be inspired to lead and influence those around them.
