Impossible or Possible? What do you believe?

One of my favourite movies is Mission Impossible starring Tom Cruise. I remember when the first movie in this franchise came out and Britton and I went to see it in the theatres. Cruise stars as Agent Ethan Hunt of the IMF, the Impossible Mission Force, tasked with taking on missions that other spy agencies think are impossible. What others see as impossible, Hunt and his team of crack agents can somehow pull it off and save the world. I love the action, the stunts, the tech, and the premise that nothing is impossible.

I think I love this movie so much because when I look around, I see a lot of impossible situations and challenges in my life. People I care about battling cancer, friends drowning in relationship problems, financial challenges, and people around the world dying from viruses and diseases for which there are no cures.  Life is filled with impossible situations and challenges. The Mission Impossible movies offer me an escape from the impossible parts of everyday life. Yet when the movie ends, and the lights come up we find ourselves still surrounded by those impossible challenges and situations.

In Genesis 18:14, the LORD says to Abraham, “Is anything too hard for the LORD?” In the book of Job, Job declares in the midst of troubles that God “can do all things” (Job 42:2) In Jeremiah 19, amongst the prophecy of hardships that are coming, the prophet says “nothing is too hard for God.” And in Luke 1:37 an angel declares to a young teenage girl that “nothing is impossible to God” right after they deliver the news of an impossible situation, that she was pregnant with the Messiah – Jesus.  There is a recurring theme in the Bible that nothing is impossible for God. Jesus himself even declares this in Matthew 19:26, that “with God all things are possible.”

But do you really believe this? Do you really believe that nothing is impossible for God?  Can God really do the impossible or is the impossible just something we see done in movies and stories?

This Sunday we are continuing our series “Do you really believe this?” and we will be wrestling with the truth that nothing is impossible for God. I hope you’ll join us this Sunday and discover what it really means to believe that God can and is willing to do the impossible in our lives today.

See you soon,
