It happened a few years ago. I knew it was coming, a day I’d been dreading for years, but I couldn’t deny it any longer. I first noticed it one night while I was reading. Then I became aware of it one Sunday while I was preaching, back when we were in the gym, but I just ignored it and struggled through. It became noticeable in meetings so I just asked others to do what I couldn’t do anymore. Then it happened in a restaurant; I looked down and couldn’t read the menu. Yep, I needed glasses.
I have had glasses for years, but this was a different kind of glasses. I considered progressives to be “old person glasses”. I had resisted for years, thinking, “I’m not old enough for those”. I told myself that it wasn’t that bad; I was just tired. I blamed the lighting, the font, and anything I could because I wasn’t willing to admit that I couldn’t see the world clearly anymore.
Then one day, as I sat in a chair in the doctor’s office, I heard the words, “You need progressives.” I smiled and laughed, but I was screaming “NOOOOOOOO!” in my head. I bought my first pair of progressives that day. When my new glasses arrived a week later and I put them on for the first time, it was an eye-opening experience. I began to see the world in a whole new way. My life changed for the better that day.
This weekend as we gather together, both virtually and in person, I want to invite you to try on a new pair of glasses, figuratively speaking. We are going to look at Luke 6:17-26, a passage in which Jesus invites us to see the world differently. Jesus invites us to change our perspective about three things we value in life – possessions, comfort, and people. Jesus invites us to see these things through his eyes; if we will do that, our entire worldview will be changed.
I hope you’ll join us this Sunday as we discover a brand-new perspective on life and how it can help us become exactly what Jesus envisions.
See you Sunday,
Pastor Kirk
