The Lightbearer – Luke 8:16-18

Pastor Eric shared passionately about his love of Matcha tea. What is something you are excited to talk about and share with others? Contrast this with how you feel about sharing the Good News. What do you think is the difference? How are you stewarding the light you have been given?

Why wouldn’t everyone want God’s light to illumine their lives so that could see how to avoid holes and dangers of the dark? (John 3:19-20) Use an adjective to describe how you will feel when you bow before Jesus Christ on judgment day? Excited/nervous/hesitant/jubilant/relieved, etc. Considering this moment, is there anything you need to bring to the Light of Jesus?

Tell of a time recently when you shared the good news with someone in word only;  in deed only. Why are both words and actions essential to obeying Jesus command to share the gospel? (Luke 6:18; Mark 16) What is more important to you: Jesus’ praise for sharing the Gospel or another person’s response?

Read this riddle to your group: “You’re the engineer of a train. There are 36 people on board. At the first stop ten get off and two get on. At the next stop, no one gets off but five get on. At the third stop, four get off and two get on. Now what is the name of the engineer?” This little story illustrates how we often fail to listen carefully or only hear the last part of what it being said. Jesus in the passage says to “Take care how you listen!”. What does listening to Jesus actually look like in your life? Are there other things you can do to “listen with intent” or “have ears of obedience”?

Application: take time this week with Holy Spirit to see if your inner and outer lives reflect the ways of Jesus and to find one way to can put your lamp on a stand in both word AND deed.
