- Describe yourself in a few words or phrases. Do you have different words that you repeat over and over again to yourself that are different from the words you use to describe yourself publicly?
- Everyone’s identity is formed in response to something (job, ethnicity/family heritage, appearance, reputation, etc.) or someone (parent, partner/spouse, boss, children, etc.) What is your identity a response to?
- Read Matthew 4:1-11. In Matthew’s account of Jesus’ baptism, Jesus is immediately sent into the wilderness to fast and pray. The temptations that Jesus faces center around three identity lies. What are they? How does Jesus respond to the identity lies? Why do you think Matthew includes this account of Jesus wrestling with identity lies?
- Your identity should never be based on another’s person assessment of you, on your own best guess, or some external factor. Read Ephesians 2:10, 19, 1 John 3:1, 2 Corinthians 5:17, 21, 1 Peter 2:9. What do these verses say about how God feels towards you? What are some other verses of Scripture that speak to God’s view of who you are?
- If you believed that you were all that God says you are in Christ, how would that change the way you lived? The way you interact with others? The way you worship the Lord?
- What is one thing you can do this week to grow in the identity Christ has given you?
