How is the word ‘love’ overused and misunderstood in our society? What are some things/persons that you truly love? Read John 21:15. What do you think Jesus was referring to when he said ‘these’ to Peter? What might this refer to in your life today in 2022?
Of the three categories for ‘these’ mentioned from the temptation of Jesus (Matthew 4:1-11), which one does the enemy use against you most often?
- Something I rely on more than God
- Something more important than my relationship with Jesus
- The desire for power or control
Read Matthew 22:37-40. Sum up the Great Commandment in a word or phrase. Discuss the validity of these statements from non-believers about Christians:
- Christians are the most warlike people (Gandhi).
- Love doesn’t seek to create clones of itself. Selfishness does that.
- Christian friendship extends as far as badgering someone to attend church. After you go, you are on your own.
Read John 13:34-35, 1 John 4:7-8, John 15:12. If love for God cannot be self-contained, what can be done to change how the world views Christians?
Jesus tells Peter, “Feed my lambs”, “Take care of my sheep”, and “Feed my sheep”. On the spectrum from ‘Always Being Fed’ to ‘Always Feeding Others’, where do you land? How is your love for Jesus finding practical expression in your love for people?
This week, ask Jesus each day, “What is it that you require of me?” Then in obedience, act on what He says.
