- In their book, First Things First, Stephen Covey and Roger and Rebecca Merrill ask this penetrating question: “What is the one activity that you know if you did superbly well and consistently would have significant positive results in your personal life?” What is that one thing for you?
- Read Luke 10:38-42. Have you ever tried to measure your significance by what you do? If so, how? In what ways do you sometimes find yourself busy, upset, and troubled like Martha? Is Jesus suggesting here that serving Him is not important at all? Why is it sometimes easier for Christians to “do things” for Christ rather than to “be with” Christ? Read Mark 10:43-33. What had Jesus already told the disciples about serving?
- What choice has Mary made that Jesus commends? Read John 8:31-&32 and 2 Timothy 3:14-17. Why is listening to God an essential part of being with Him?
- Pastor Curtis gave a short list of ways to be with Jesus: reading the Word, praying, worshipping. What methods of reading the Word, praying, and/or worshipping are helpful to you personally? What else would you add to this list of ways to be with Jesus? When you spend concerted effort to be with God, what is one thing you personally gain that you don’t get any other way? How can we consistently spend time with Jesus without falling into dry routine or rigid, teeth-gritting legalism?
- Time with Jesus transforms our head, our heart, and our hands. How have you seen God working in your life to transform you? Don’t think big dramatic events like Paul’s conversion on the Damascus road but rather smaller, incremental ways you are changing.
- What is one thing you can do this week to “be with” Jesus in an unhurried, thoughtful way?
