Group Discussion – November 12, 2023

  1. We define ourselves in different ways with different titles or terms. Fill in the blank for yourself, “I am ___________________.” Fill in the blank for others in your group, “You are ___________________.” Which identity do you prefer?
  2. What influences your understanding of who you are? Why does it matter what influences your identity?
  3. Read Genesis 1:26–28; Exodus 19:4–6; Ephesians 1:3–14; 2:6–10. How does understanding the Bible’s story help form your identity? Are there other Scriptures regarding your identity that are special to you personally, ones the Lord brings to your mind when you doubt who you are in His eyes?
  4. Pastor Tim put the emphasis on the word “you” as in you are the salt of the earth, and you are the light of the world. It’s easy for us to look out at the chaos and confusion in the world and think that our small part won’t be helpful at all. However, the word “you” in this passage is a reminder that God wants and invites us to be a part of the solution. In what ways it is a both weighty responsibility and a sacred privilege to represent Jesus as salt and light?
  5. Commentator Matthew Henry said: ‘We must not only be good but do good.’ Pastor Tim talked about bringing lift to relationships through our character, self-sacrificing service, and talking about Jesus. Which ones of these is easiest for you? What one thing can you do this week to bring lift to your family, neighbourhood, workplace, marriage? Who needs to hear your story of faith?
