Group Discussion Guide – The Way – Loving Relationships

The Way
Loving Relationships (IN)

Pastor Kirk, October 25, 2020

Read: John 13:1-17, 34-35

Big Idea:    When we know who we are in Christ we can love like Jesus did.

Getting to Know Each Other (Start Here):

  • What one word sums up who you are?
  • Take a moment to share a word for each person in your group.

Going Deeper:

  1. How does our UP relationship with God impact our IN relationship with other believers?
  2. John 13:1-5 – How does this UP relationship alter our concept of ourselves? Do we live as one chosen by God? Do family, friends, jobs, etc matter more to us than our relationship with Jesus?
  3. In John 13:4-5 Jesus wrapped a towel around his waist and then washed the feet of the disciples.  Kirk said Jesus put on the outfit of a servant.  Today, why do we feel like it diminishes us to love like Jesus through serving?
  4. What does your identity in Jesus look like?
  5. Who has loved you like Jesus does? How did their love impact you?
  6. Do you tend toward Serving or Challenging?
  7. Can you think of someone you have served, but did not challenge?  Or challenged but did not serve? Jesus both served and challenged Judas and Peter (John 13:21-28; 35-38).  Why are both challenging and serving others important?
  8. How does challenging and serving change or stay consistent in the different relational settings in your life? (Home, work, church, community)
  9. Jesus washed the disciples’ feet before challenging them at the table. What can the church do to show radical love to non-believers to open the door up so we can show them how to live like Jesus?
  10. Is there something hindering you from loving like Jesus in every area of your life?

Apply it:

  • What practical act of service or challenge can you do this week to follow the Jesus way of loving others?

Spend time praying for and with each other. (If you are comfortable allow moments of silence to linger to hear from God).
