Group Discussion Guide – The Way – Disciple Making

The Way
Disciple Making (IN)

Pastor Shauna, October 18, 2020

Read: Matt 9:35-10:8

Big Idea:    Jesus taught and modeled the way to those who followed him so that they would go out from him to live as he lived and do what he did.

Getting to Know Each Other (Start Here):

  • Share your testimony about discipleship? How have you been disciple?
  • What is the Gospel?

Going Deeper:

  1. What makes you feel inadequate when followings God’s call for evangelism?
  2. What excuses do we make for not being part of Jesus’ mission to make disciples? Why do we keep our faith in Jesus to ourselves? What does Jesus tell us to do? Mt9:38
  3. What lies hold you back from radically making disciples? (That people aren’t interested? Fear of being rejected? Etc.)
  4. How are people “harassed and helpless” today? How does the Gospel apply and repair it? (Definitions of the Gospel at bottom of discussion guide)
  5. Who was the first person you shared the gospel with? The last person? Were there further conversations/prayers with these people?
  6. Shauna mentioned that “Our compassion for the lost must flow from our connection to the Father.” Is this statement true for you?  What is your compassion level for the lost?
  7. Do the needs and hurts of others spur us to action? Why? Why not?  What does Jesus want our action to be? Matthew 9:35-38.
  8. Think about the people who Jesus mentioned in this story. Are we like Jesus and discipling others? Are we lost and looking for someone to guide us as our shepherd? Or are there things we are doing that make people feel ‘harassed and helpless’?
  9. Do you have compassion for the lost? As a group spend some time praying to see people the way that God sees them.

Apply it:

  • Pastor Shauna challenged us to pray about who we should reach out to this week. Keep looking for where God is at work around you and join Him. Pray for eyes to see the harvest.

Spend time praying for and with each other. (If you are comfortable allow moments of silence to linger to hear from God).

Gospel: This is to help with the gospel question.

The ‘gospel’ is the good news that through Christ the power of God’s kingdom has entered history to renew the whole world. When we believe and rely on Jesus’ work and record (rather than ours) for our relationship to God, that kingdom power comes upon us and begins to work through us.” (Tim Keller)

The gospel is that God himself has come to rescue and renew creation in and through the work of Jesus Christ on our behalf. (Caesar Kalinowski)
