- How well do you wait? If your friends and family were asked this same question about you, what would they say? What is something you are waiting for today?
- Read Psalm 46:1-3, Deut 33:26-27, Psalm 91:2, Psalm 18:2-3. In a word or phrase, define the word ‘refuge’ as you understand it. What are some of the things we try to substitute for God as our refuge? How do you remember that God is present as your refuge during the earthquakes or tsunamis of life? What can we practically do to experience the truth that God is “ever present?”
- Read Psalm 46:4-6. Jerusalem was one of a few cities not built on a river. When King of Assyria attacked Jerusalem, he imagined the lack of water would drive the citizens to surrender. But King Hezekiah had built an underground tunnel which secretly brought a little stream of water 1,777 feet through solid rock from the spring of Gihon to the pool of Siloam in Jerusalem. What did this river signify to ancient Israelites in Jerusalem? What does it signify for us today? Is there any area where your friendship with God is stale and need refreshing? If so, what is stopping the stream of his refreshing?
- Read Psalm 46:8-10. Being still before God or waiting for him to act can be hard in a busy world where we like instantaneous answers. What area of your life today do you need to be still so you can hear clearly from God? What can you eliminate or add to your life that would help you to be still before him and wait for his answer?
- Verses 7 and 10 are the same in Psalm 46 as a reminder of the truth that God is with us in the chaos and the waiting. Say these words together in unison as a group to cement this truth in your hearts. Repeat them throughout the week as needed as you wait on God.
