Group Discussion Guide – Greater Than – What do you Have?

What Do You Have?
Greater Than

Pastor Kirk, March 8th, 2020

Scripture: John 6:1-15, 25-71

Summary: Jesus wants us to join him in his work. When we give Jesus what we have he does the rest and it’s greater than we imagine.

Checking In (Start Here):

How has your pursuit of the “greater than” life in Christ been going? (Setting aside your agenda, being obedient, seeking His presence).

Going Deeper:

  1. Read John 6:1-15: Jesus had a plan in the feeding of the five thousand. What was revealed in his question in v.5? How did the different disciples respond to the situation?
  2. Why did the people want to crown Jesus and called him the Prophet? Read Numbers 11:1-23 and John 6. Search for the parallels. (N 11:1= John 6:41,43; N 11:7-9= J 6:31; N 11:13= J 6:51; N 11:22= J 6:9,12)
  3. Is there a situation in your life that you need Jesus perspective in? How do you listen for his direction?
  4. Compare the accounts of the feeding of 5000 (Matt 4:13-21, Mark 6:35-44, Luke 9:10-17). You could include the accounts of feeding the 4000 (Matt 15:32-38, Mark 8:1-9) to look for themes or common goals. Jesus has a grand plan and uses people and their limited resources. He includes us in His plan.
  5. Look into James 1&2 and discuss the living out of faith. Works that flow out of faith. Faith that inspires action.
  6. How did peoples attitudes change towards Jesus from the beginning of John 6 (John 6:14) and the end (John 6:41-42, 60, 66)?
  7. (Up) How does your faith need to grow? Or what have you done to grow your faith (John 6:6)?
  8. (In) Is there an instruction from Jesus that you have been challenged by? Why not share it with one another?
  9. (Out) How can engaging with Jesus plan impact those around us?
  10. Jesus provides nourishment for the people but also tests the developing faith of Philip. How is the Lord providing for your needs and inspiring your faith?

Apply it:

  • At the beginning of each day ask, “What do I have for Jesus today?” Look for opportunities to give what you have this week… time, treasure, and talents.

 Community Reading Plan: John 7&8

This week add John 7&8 to your devotions. Look at the relationships that are present in these chapters and keep two questions in mind.

  • What do I need to know from this chapter (a truth about my reality or God or a life lesson)?
  • What do I need to grow (Is there something God is trying to teach me through His Word)?

Keep a journal nearby and write down any questions or thoughts you can share with your Community Group. Remind and encourage each other to participate in this group devotion.
