Group Discussion Guide – Greater Than – First Steps

First Steps
Greater Than

Pastor Kirk, Feb 16th, 2020

Scripture: John 2:1-12

Summary: Jesus is doing something new; he replaces religion with relationship, the old covenant with a new one, and he wants do something new in your life.

Main Thought: With Jesus the best is always yet to come.

Getting to Know Each Other (Start Here):

  • Have you ever experienced shame? What brought it on?

Going Deeper:

  1. Why do you think Mary was so concerned about this families wedding party?
  2. What do you think about the reference Jesus makes to his ‘hour’? 5 times in John he refers to the fact that his hour has not yet come (2:4, 7:6,8,30, 8:20). 3 times he declares his time has come (12:23, 13:1, 17:1).
  3. Mary knew that Jesus was the Messiah. That is why she asked for a miracle before his time. Why do you think she asked for this miracle? What did this have to do with Jesus being the Messiah?
  4. Jesus response was not a no. But he corrected Mary’s motivation. What was corrected by saying his time had not come? He would have received praise and accolades for this miracle. So, where was he saying his motivation comes from? Where does he receive his glorification from?
  5. What do you think that the significance is that Jesus supplied an abundance (v.6) of high quality (v.10) wine? What could this be a foreshadowing of?
  6. How has Jesus transformed your contents? (2 Corinthians 4:7-12)
  7. Jesus never touches the water or wine in the story. He didn’t really get recognition for the miracle. What sort of example is this for us? Where did Jesus receive His glorification from?
  8. What do you think the significance of the stone washing jars being used could be? (Examples: Ceremonial cleaning before worship, old covenant to new covenant, bringing the divine into the celebration)

Apply it:

  • Where do you need Jesus Christ to take something old and make it new in your life?
  • Honestly answer the question: Do I want to live a “greater than” life with Jesus?

Pray without ceasing:

Pray for Turning Point Alliance Church (Filipino), for Pastor Gino and the church, that they would continue to reach out with love to the Filipino community of Regina with the Gospel. That their doors would be open to all in their community and that God would use them as workers in His field.

Community Reading Plan: John 1&2

This week add John 1&2 to your devotions. Look at the relationships that are present in these chapters and keep two questions in mind.

  • What do I need to know from this chapter (a truth about my reality or God or a life lesson)?
  • What do I need to grow (Is there something God is trying to teach me through His Word)?

Keep a journal nearby and write down any questions or thoughts you can share with your Community Group. Remind and encourage each other to participate in this group devotion.
