Awakening to Help
Finding Your Way Back to God
Pastor Kirk, Jan 19th, 2020
Scripture: Luke 15:11-32
Summary: When we admit we are powerless to fulfill our longings on our own, we’ll discover there’s help and that help has a name. His name is Jesus.
Main Thought: We can always start over with God.
Getting to Know Each Other (Start Here):
- Have you ever done something that you needed help doing but didn’t ask for it or refused help?
Going Deeper:
- How did God help you last year? What are you anticipating with Him this year? How has He made Himself known to you?
- The Parable talks about how the father waited to help the son. He was waiting for his return. Has this been true in your relationship with God? How?
- Read John 10: What metaphor does Jesus use to identify His followers? Read it again and discuss what Jesus says is true about Himself and about you.
- In the parable the son was probably shocked by the father’s actions and anticipation of his return. Have you ever been surprised by God’s presence in a tough situation? Or His reaction to you or others?
- God is a Father who is prepared and ready to help His children. What does this mean is true of us then? How should we respond? Maybe reread John 10 and see what Jesus does.
- Read Luke 15:20 – Discuss the father’s reaction to the son. Remember to think about the running, the kiss, and the “Kazazah” ceremony that Pastor Kirk showed us with the pot.
- The Father never gave up on his son. How is this a description of the kingdom? How does it help you think about your relationship with God?
Apply it:
- Admit that you cannot do life on your own, surrender to Jesus who wants more for you than you could ever imagine.
Pray without ceasing:
Pray for the people of Regina who do not have steady shelter. That they be safe during the winter and that they will be welcomed with open arms during harsh time. Pray for the workers in shelters that their hearts would overflow with love and compassion. That they will be wise and gentle at the same time.
Community Reading Plan: Genesis 29&30
This week add Genesis 29&30 to your devotions. Look at the relationships that are present in these chapters and keep two questions in mind.
- What do I need to know from this chapter (a truth about my reality or God or a life lesson)?
- What do I need to grow (Is there something God is trying to teach me through His Word)?
Keep a journal nearby and write down any questions or thoughts you can share with your Community Group. Remind and encourage each other to participate in this group devotion.
