Do you really believe this?

When I was a kid, the church I grew up in had a practice of reading the Apostles’ Creed from time to time. If you’ve never heard of the Apostles’ Creed,
click here. It is a series of ancient statements of beliefs about God. Tradition says the creed was created for the church when each of the 12 Apostles Jesus contributed a statement of what they believed about God the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit. We first hear about the Apostle’s creed in a letter dated AD 390.  The song “This I Believe (The Creed)” that we sing from time to time is based on the Apostles’ Creed. To listen to the song, click here.

As a kid, I remember being asked to stand, to open my hymnal to the back, and read the Apostles’ Creed with the rest of the church.  The creed begins with the words “I believe…” and then goes on to state the tenets of being a disciple of Jesus. Week after week I’d read those words. I’ll be honest – I never really thought about what they meant or how they impacted my life. While I said “I believe…”, I’m not sure that I really did.

This week we are starting a new series called “Do you really believe this?” This four-week series is about four beliefs that serve as the foundation to becoming who Jesus envisions. Unless we wrestle with these four truths and begin to believe with all our being that they are true, we will never know true intimacy with God, we won’t discover continuous personal renewal, and we will not become the person we were created to be.

This week as we kick off our series, we are going to begin to wrestle with whether we truly believe that God is good. Oh sure, we all say “God is good” and sometimes we even sing it, but do we really, deep down with all our being, believe that God is good?  I hope you’ll join us this Sunday as we look at Psalm 27 and three choices that help us see and experience the goodness of God even when things aren’t good.

 See you Sunday,

 Pastor Kirk
