Do you collect prayers?

A number of years ago, I met someone who described themselves as a collector of prayers. Have you ever met someone who collects prayers?

I wasn’t sure what this person meant when they said they collected prayers. In my mind prayer is a conversation with God. Prayer is speaking with God about what’s on our heart as well as listening to him about what’s on his heart.  Prayer is talking with God just like I talk with my best friend or my wife. When this person said they collected prayers, I didn’t understand and wondered if they collected other conversations, so I asked what they meant.

Darlene shared with me that she’d been collecting prayers for years. Prayers from Christ-followers of ancient history right up to present. She collected these prayers to help her grow in an understanding of how to talk with God, and to help her understand how to live a prayer-focused life.  Just as a child listens to the sounds and words their parents make in order to learn to talk, collecting prayers taught her how to pray and grow in intimacy with God.

This weekend we are continuing our series called “The Way”. We will be exploring the part prayer played in the life of Jesus and in the early church.  I hope you’ll join us this weekend as we discover that prayer is the fuel of the Christian life. Without praying nothing happens, but when we do pray, we become exactly what Jesus envisions!

See you Sunday,

Pastor Kirk
