We have just come through another harvest season here in Saskatchewan. As a person who grew up in rural area, I love seeing combines and trucks in the field. It’s a wonderful sight to see farmers and other workers taking off the crops, gathering in the harvest. Farmers know that harvest time is not a time to relax, kick back, and hope that ripe fields take care of themselves. If a farmer waits too long, the crop will spoil. If they don’t have enough help, they won’t be able to cover all their acres and some of the harvest will not be gathered. All of the time spent planting the seed and nurturing the crop will be wasted.
In Matthew 9, Jesus talks about a different kind of harvest – a spiritual harvest of those ready to hear the good news of the gospel. When I read this passage, I hear the urgency in Jesus’ voice as he asks his disciples to get involved in this unique harvest, which is truly the greatest mission on earth. I believe that urgency is the same today because the crowds of people Jesus was referring to 2000 years ago still exist today. The harvest, as Jesus put it, is still plentiful and in need of workers. But what can you and I do, especially without the physical presence of Jesus on earth?
This Sunday, we continue in our series The Way by studying how Jesus calls us to and equips us for the greatest mission on earth – making disciples. Join us in person or online to see what it is Jesus tells us to do to gather in the vast harvest and to make disciples who will join us in the cause.
See you Sunday,
Pastor Shauna
