Awakening to Regret

“Regrets, I’ve had a few…”

Frank Sinatra first sang those words in 1969, and his song “My Way” spent 75 weeks in the top 40 singles charts around the world.  The song tells the story of someone proudly declaring that they have come to the end of their life and that they have lived as they wanted, doing things their way, and doing everything their heart longed to do.

Last week we began looking at the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15.  If ever there was a song that the Prodigal Son would sing, I think it would be this one.  I can imagine him belting out the lyrics as he thought about what he did with his inheritance, but then I also imagine him pausing when he got to the line, “Regrets, I’ve had a few”.  I think the Prodigal Son would have trouble singing the next line “But then again, too few to mention.”  As I read the parable of the Prodigal Son I see him filled with regret and wishing he could start over.

This weekend as we continue to explore the parable of the Prodigal Son we are going to look at what happened after the son pursued the longings of his heart.  I hope you’ll join us as we explore the cycle of longing and regret that we can find ourselves in when we live as prodigals, and how we can break free and start over.

See you Sunday,

Pastor Kirk
