Embrace the Unexpected
Greater Than
Pastor Kirk, March 15th, 2020
Scripture: John 6:14-24
Summary: Until we fully embrace Jesus in every area of life we will struggle with the Greater Than life.
Checking In (Start Here):
How has your pursuit of the “greater than” life in Christ been going? (Setting aside your agenda, being obedient, seeking His presence).
Going Deeper:
- In verses 22-24 the crowd searched for Jesus because He was not where they expected him to be. What unexpected places have you found Jesus? (His presence or impact)
- What is declared about Jesus and his relationship to creation when He walks on water?
- Compare and contrast how Jesus is greater than Moses. Use some of the imagery in this portion of scripture that can remind us of Moses. (Feeding people, water, mountain, wisdom, freedom).
- How important to you and the disciples that Jesus presence is a source of comfort and not fear?
- “Fear not” appears 365 times in scripture. That’s enough for one a day. Be honest and check with each other if you are experiencing fear with what is going on in the world right now. Encourage each other. Proclaim the truth that we do not fear because Jesus is with us and for us.
- What does the statement “fear not” mean to you? (Pray for one another right now around anything that is causing fear).
- (Up) What name of God helps you to face fear?
- (In) What can you do for one another during this time to focus on God’s protection?
- (Out) What can you do to support and care for your neighbors? Social distancing does not mean we stop caring.
Apply it:
- How do you need to embrace Jesus today? Or if you are dealing with fear how do you need to be embraced by Jesus?
Pray Without Ceasing
- Pray for those who live paycheck to paycheck. Who can’t financially afford to skip work or miss hours. Pray for peace in the face of uncertainty. Pray for community care and bonding together.
- Pray for the University and College students who have to leave their studies and return home.
Community Reading Plan: John 9&10
This week add John 9&10 to your devotions. Look at the relationships that are present in these chapters and keep two questions in mind.
- What do I need to know from this chapter (a truth about my reality or God or a life lesson)?
- What do I need to grow (Is there something God is trying to teach me through His Word)?
Keep a journal nearby and write down any questions or thoughts you can share with your Community Group. Remind and encourage each other to participate in this group devotion.
