Group Discussion Guide – Greater Than – What Are You Seeking?

What Are You Seeking?
Greater Than

Pastor Kirk, Feb 23rd, 2020

Scripture: John 4:43-54

Summary: The path to the “greater than” life is marked with persistence, trust and sharing, and continually reminding yourself what you are seeking, his presence not his power. When we seek his power we miss his presence, but when we seek his presence we discover everything we need.

Big Idea: The “greater than” life is about being in his presence.

Checking In (Start Here):

  • What is the most challenging or beautiful hike you have been on?

Going Deeper:

  1. How has your pursuit if the “greater than” life in Christ been going? (Setting aside your agenda, being obedient, seeking His presence).
  2. How do you feel you are doing living the “greater than” life that is described in John 14:10?
  3. Have you recently had a V8 moment? One of those moments where you didn’t do the right thing or make the right choice?
  4. Like the official where do you need to take Jesus at his word (John 4:50)? What does it mean to take the Word (John 1:1-5) at his word? That his words are eternal life (John 6:68).
  5. Read Philippians 2:1-18: In your life what does it look like to hold onto the word of life?
  6. (Up) What can you do to seek God’s presence in your life? Regardless how busy it is.
  7. (In) How can you as a community group help one another seek God’s presence? Is there something you can do each time you get together to seek God’s presence?
  8. (Out) How can seeking God’s presence impact how you relate to other people? (Work, Home, Extended Family, grocery store)
  9. Read 2 Chronicles 7:14, Psalm 24:3-6, 105:4, James 4:8, Numbers 6:24-26. What does it mean to seek God’s face? What happens when you seek someone else out and look them in the face?

Apply it:

  • Where do you need Jesus Christ to take something old and make it new in your life?
  • Read John 14-18 write down what Jesus promises to His followers and prays over you about presence.

Pray without ceasing:

Pray for Heritage Alliance Church, for Rev. John McGregor and the church, that their hearts would be united as one with Christ by the indwelling Holy Spirit as they reach out to Regina with the Gospel. That the community around them would experience Christ’s love and grace through their presence. That their lives would testify to His goodness.

Community Reading Plan: John 3&4

This week add John 3&4 to your devotions. Look at the relationships that are present in these chapters and keep two questions in mind.

  • What do I need to know from this chapter (a truth about my reality or God or a life lesson)?
  • What do I need to grow (Is there something God is trying to teach me through His Word)?

Keep a journal nearby and write down any questions or thoughts you can share with your Community Group. Remind and encourage each other to participate in this group devotion.
