The Grace of Giving – Generous Throughout – Group Discussion Guide

The Grace of Giving
Generous Throughout

Pastor Colin, Nov 17th, 2019

Scripture: 2 Cor 8:10-9:5

Summary: We were created to be generous throughout every area of our lives.

Main Thought: Starting is good, Finishing is better.

Getting to Know Each Other (Start Here):

  • Have you ever started something and not completed it?

Going Deeper:

  1. Paul says that we are supposed to give out of what we have. What might this statement mean to people in different stages of life (teens, young adults, new parents, grandparents, etc)?
  2. Read Luke 19:1-9: what are the stumbling blocks in people’s way and what is done to remove them? What acts of generosity are in these verses?
  3. How does God use what we give as a generous gift? Think of when Jesus feeds the thousands (Matt 14:13-21 & Matt 15:29-39)
  4. What does it take to sustain generosity over a long period of time? What might need to happen for generosity to move from intention to impact?
  5. What are the repercussions of unmet intentions and commitments? How do they affect us as people and what sort of testimony are they to God?
  6. 2 Cor. 8:14 directs us to equality. How do you think our needs connect us to others needs? Does it help to pretend like we need nothing? How can the practice of expressing need help our relationship with God?
  7. What do you think Paul was talking about in 2 Cor. 8:21? Why does it matter if we are doing what is right in the eyes of people if we do what is right in God’s eyes?
  8. Luke 12:32-34 – how does the gift of the kingdom from God help us to keep an eternal perspective?

Apply it:

  • Where have you started generously and not finished? Confess this to God and then find ways to start being generous again and make sure you see it to completion.

Pray without ceasing:

Pray the Lord’s Prayer together. Unite your hearts and prayers with the Lord’s desires.

Community Reading Plan: 1 Corinthians 11 – 2 Corinthians 4

This week add 1 Corinthians 11 to 2 Corinthians 4 to your devotions. Read a chapter a day up to and including chapter 4. Look at the relationships that are present in these chapters and keep two questions in mind.

  • What do I need to know from this chapter (a truth about my reality or God or a life lesson)?
  • What do I need to grow (Is there something God is trying to teach me through His Word)?

Keep a journal nearby and write down any questions or thoughts you can share with your Community Group. Remind and encourage each other to participate in this group devotion.
