Marks of the Messiah – Seeking Out – Discussion Guide

Marks of the Messiah
Seeking Out

Kirk Cowman, February 24, 2019

Scripture:Mark 5:1-20

Main Thought:  Jesus is seeking broken people to make them whole.

Summary:  Jesus is on a mission to seek broken out people and make them whole and he invites broken people to join him in this mission.

Getting to Know Each Other (Start Here):

When was the last time you broke something? What did you do with that broken thing? Did you try to hide it, ignore it, fix it, or just get over it?

Going Deeper:

  1. Pastor Kirk began by saying we are all broken, we are broken in body, soul, and spirit. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
  2. Read Mark 5:1-20 together. What stands out to you or catches your attention about this story?  Why?
  3. If you were a member of the community and heard or saw what had happened, how do you think you would have reacted?
  4. The demons went into the pigs as proof that the man was changed, and that God has power over all things. What proof is evident in your life that you have been changed?  How has God showed his power through your brokenness?
  5. Jesus will not go where he is not invited. In Mark 5:16-17 the people who had seen and heard of what Jesus had done asked Jesus to leave the region.  There would have been other broken people in that community yet the community basically said, “We don’t need your help, Jesus, we can take care of ourselves.”  Is there an area of your life (body, soul, spirit) where you have responded as the community did?
  6. Jesus invites you to join him in helping broken people. In Mark 5:19-20 Jesus told the man to go and tell others what Jesus had done for him.  When you have experienced healing and wholeness from Jesus, do you go and tell your story of brokenness and how Jesus has made you whole?

Apply it:

  1. In what ways are you broken today and needing Jesus’ help?
  2. Do you accept the brokenness of others without judgment or gossiping?
  3. How are you helping others find wholeness?  Who has the Holy Spirit brought into your life for you to help?
