Deeper: Let the River Flow – Discussion Guide

Deeper
Let the River Flow
Pastor Kirk, September 23, 2019

Scripture:  Ezekiel 47:1-12, Acts 19

Summary:  When the disciples in Ephesus were filled with Holy Spirit their lives and the lives of everyone in Ephesus were changed, just as Ezekiel’s vision of the river described.

Main Thought:  When you step into the river you’ll be led into community, confession and life-giving change.

Getting to Know Each Other:

Pastor Kirk shared the story of going cliff jumping, but because of his fear of heights and his fear of what was in the water, he didn’t do it.  Have you ever experienced something like that?  Have you ever been too scared to do something?  What happened?

Going Deeper:

  1. Have you received Holy Spirit?   What happened?  Share your story of receiving Holy Spirit.
  2. What do Ephesians 1:13-14, 1:17-18 and 5:18-19 teach about Holy Spirit?  How does Paul’s teaching in Ephesians line up with what happened in Acts 19?
  3. Pastor Kirk said that “Holy Spirit leads you into community,” and that “Holy Spirit’s presence and power are experienced in community.”   Based on your experiences, do you agree with these statements?  Why or why not?
  4. In Acts 19:18-19 the disciples begin openly confessing sinful behaviours and actions. What happens after the disciples confess their sins opening/publicly?  What role does confession play in being filled with Holy Spirit?
  5. What happened to Ephesus when the disciples began living Spirit-filled lives?  What changes took place?
  6. In Ezekiel 47:1-12 the river flows out of the Temple, out of the city and into the Dead Sea.  In 1 Corinthians 3:16 we discover that we are now the Temple of God.  What are the implications of these two pieces of scripture?

Apply it:

  1. What do you need to do in response to this study and sermon?
  2. How can we pray for you as you seek to apply what you’ve learned in your life this week?
