Group Discussion – Holy Spirit is a Person – Mar 13, 2022

  1. Invisible, perhaps, but real. Holy Spirit is probably the least understood person of the Trinity. Among the myths and the mistaken concepts that are shared, He has been described as a force, a ghost, and a second-class or replacement god. What are some ways you have inaccurately believed in or described Holy Spirit?
  2. One heresy about the Holy Spirit came from the understanding that Holy Spirit is thought by some to be an “essence” or “power” because “ruach”, the Hebrew word for Spirit, also means breath, and “pneuma”, the Greek word for Spirit, also means wind or air. When in your life, if ever have you viewed Holy Spirit as a force (like in Star Wars) or something to tap into (like Red Bull)?
  3. As Christians, we know Holy Spirit as a person from the way that Scripture speaks of him – very personal ways. From the following verses, what are some the attributes Holy Spirit possesses?
    1. 1 Corinthians 12:11
    2. Acts 15:28
    3. 1 Corinthians 2:11 (NASB)
  4. From the following verses, what are some the actions of Holy Spirit?
    1. Acts 1:16
    2. Nehemiah 9:20
    3. Romans 8:27
    4. Ephesians 4:30
    5. Romans 15:30
  5. Which of Holy Spirit’s attributes or actions is most meaningful to you? Why?
  6. From the following verses, what is the association Holy Spirit has to God and Jesus?
    1. Matthew 28:19
    2. 2 Corinthians 13:14
  7. Why is it vital for us to know Holy Spirit as a person? How is your faith more than just an association with a thing or an ‘it’?
  8. How does recognizing Holy Spirit as a person help you:
    1. Respond to him rightly and worship him freely?
    2. Witness to a desperate world?
