Group Discussion Guide – Brand New – A New Love

Brand New
A New Love

Pastor Daniel, May 2, 2021

Read: Luke 6:27-36

Big Idea:    Big Idea: Jesus teaches us a new way to love more than just an “eye for an eye”. This new way of loving is so simple yet painfully difficult. We love like Jesus when we love our enemies.

Getting to Know Each Other (Start Here):

  • How has technology helped you during the past year in a pandemic? How has it frustrated you?
  • Spend some time as a group reading Luke 6:27-36

Going Deeper:

  1. Do you think Jesus was serious about this teaching? Or is it just a goal or an ideal of the kingdom?
  2. How do we still apply the “eye for an eye” rule to people today?
  3. How would you describe Jesus’ love based on Luke 6:27-36?  How is this similar/different to your love for others?
  4. In verse 27 Jesus says “To you who are listening…” are you listening to Jesus when he talks about loving your enemies?
  5. What does it mean to turn the other cheek? Chat about abuse (Physical or emotional) and how these verses apply. General teaching to specific situations.
  6. Verse 35 points to Daniel’s idea that loving an enemy is actually seeking and doing good to them. What are your thoughts? Is not having anything to do with them loving? How does God’s love for the world reveal an action based love?
  7. Head/Heart/Hand; Love starts as a decision (Head) and becomes a commitment (Heart) that we then act on (Hand). How can praying for our enemies help us move along the Head/Heart/Hand continuum of love?
  8. Where does the mercy of the Father start in verses 36-37? How can we grow in Mercy? How do you think love and mercy intertwine?
  9. How would you teach the lesson of loving your enemy and giving to those who take from you in todays language?

Apply it:

  • Ask Holy Spirt to reveal to you who may be an enemy in your life and how you can BLESS them this week.
  • If you are not ready to BLESS and love your enemy spend time reading Luke 6:27-36 and think about it as God loving, you.

Spend time praying for and with each other. (If you are comfortable allow moments of silence to linger to hear from God).
